Scoring

Everytime you compete in a competitive Moldy video, you'll get points! Unless you come last place, in which case you'll receive zero points.

This is because the points you receive is based on how many people you beat. For example, let's consider this (fictional) video ranking:

  1. Sdslayer
  2. MatMart
  3. Androxma
  4. JamAttack
  5. Colon
  6. Brad

In this ranking, Sdslayer would get 50 points because he beat five players.

MatMart would get 40 points, Androxma would get 30 points, and so on. Except for Brad, who will get 0 points because he beat zero players.

Your final score is a weighted average of your scores across all videos you were in. In particular, videos with more players are weighted higher than videos with fewer players.

This means getting first place in a video with 10 people will count more than getting first place in a video with three people.

However, this also means getting last place in a video with 10 people will hurt you way more than getting last place in a video with three people!

Additionally, there is a nerf applied to people who haven't been in many Moldy videos. More on that is described in the Nerfs section below.

Edge Cases

There are still a few edge cases to note. Mainly what will happen in the event of ties and how scores are calculated for team events.

Ties

Consider the following (again, fictional) video ranking where MatMart and Androxma tied for second place:

  1. Sdslayer
  2. MatMart
  1. Androxma
  1. JamAttack
  2. Colon
  3. Brad

Unlike what you may expect, JamAttack is not in third place. Instead, your placement is determined by how many people are above you. And since there are three people above JamAttack, he is in fourth place.

So in this case, how many points would Sdslayer get? Still 50 points, since he beat six people.

However, MatMart and Androxma will get 40 points even though they technically beat only three people. This is because, I've actually been lying to you this whole time! Your points are not determine by how many people you beat, but by how many placements you beat.

Since there are six placements total and Sdslayer got first, he gets 50 points because he beat five placements. And since there are six placements total and MatMart and Androxma each got second, then they get 40 points because they beat four placements.

Teams

In team events, however, things are a little different. Consider the rankings for my (this time real) Pirates video, for example:

  1. Moldy
  1. Sdslayer
  1. Ender
  1. Tap
  1. MatMart
  1. Looch
  1. Androxma
  1. Stallion

Since this is a team event, MatMart's team doesn't all tie for fifth place, but are instead in second place (because there are only two teams).

In this event, Moldy's team gets 10 points because they got first and there are two placements total. And MatMart's team gets zero points because they got last place.

Nerfs

Players who haven't been in many videos will have a nerf applied to their score. For example, consider Emnerson, who placed 2/9 in my third Hide and Seek video:

  1. Ender
  2. Emnerson
  3. JamAttack
  4. Sdslayer
  5. MatMart
  6. GeoBlitzy
  7. Brad
  8. Colon
  9. Voxicat

Since he got second place and there were nine placements in total, he should get 70 points and be skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard. However, since Emnerson has only ever been in this one competition, that would be very unfair for people who have been in more competitions. Instead, we consider this a fluke and nerf his score.

In specific, once you have faced 20 unique "people" (placements) across all videos you're in then your score will stop being nerfed.

Since Emnerson has only faced eight other people, which is less than half of the 20 you need to have faced in order to not get nerfed, then his final score is only 25 instead of 70.

Flaws

As with all things in life, there are a few flaws with this method of ranking.

The biggest flaw is something inherent to my channel. Unlike sports, where most players will play most of the time, it is never a guarantee that you will be invited to a Moldy video. This means, if you only get invite to a few Moldy videos but get lucky and place high in all of them, then your score will stay very high if you never get invited to another Moldy video.

There easiest way to fix this would be to simply add a score bonus for every video that you're in. But then that gives Moldy video regulars a huge advantage over more casual participants.

Additionally, more recent videos could be weighted higher than older videos. But again, that still gives some fair players a disadvantage.

Right now, I'm fine with the way the leaderboard looks. If I believe this becomes an issue in the future, then I may adjust the ranking algorithm (such as by requiring you to have faced much more than 20 players across your videos to avoid getting nerfed).

Scoring

In order to reward consistency over flukes, the following is used in calculating your score:

  1. Whenever you play in a video, you'll get points! (Assuming you didn't come dead last.)
  2. Points are based on how many people were in the video. The more people you beat, the more points you get!
  3. Players who have been in few videos or in videos with few opponents will have their score nerfed.
  4. Your final score is a weighted average of your score in each video.

Missing Videos

Only videos on this Stats Viewer count for points. Videos are excluded if:

  1. They are only a 1v1
  2. They are not strictly competitive in nature (such as coop videos)
